Nandina has been associated with "Nanten" (meaning "to turn misfortune into fortune") since the Edo period,
and is known as an auspicious tree.
In addition to being an auspicious item, it has also been used as a crude drug and has been familiar since ancient times.
In the world of patterns, Nandina is incorporated as a "吉祥紋 (kissho-mon, auspicious pattern)" and is also used as a motif for kimonos and obis.

Kyo-Yuzen paper, which Kyoto artisans make one by one by hand, is produced using a technique similar to silk screen printing.
For each design, multiple stencils are prepared for the number of colors, and pigments are applied with a spatula, one color and one stencil at a time.
Yuzen paper made by hand-dyeing in this way has a texture, shine, and profoundness that mechanical printing cannot achieve. Also, because pigments are used, it is resistant to fading.

Furthermore, the Yuzen paper is subjected to a揉み加工 (momi-kako) treatment, and then a natural Japanese paper reinforcing material is applied over it to improve its water resistance and abrasion resistance.
