Kyo-Yuzen paper is made by artisans in Kyoto one sheet at a time using a technique similar to silkscreen printing.
For one design, several blocks are prepared for each color, and the pigment is applied one block at a time for each color with a spatula.
Yuzen paper made by hand in this way has a texture, shine, and a sense of weight that machine printing does not have. In addition, because it uses pigments, it is resistant to fading.

The Yuzen paper is then kneaded and coated with a natural Japanese paper reinforcing material to improve its water resistance and abrasion resistance.
