| Koryo-cho in Nara Prefecture is known as the "town of socks," accounting for about 40% of the socks produced in Japan. In recent years, the proportion of socks imported from overseas has been increasing in the sock industry. Feeling a sense of crisis about this situation, volunteers from textile-related companies in Koryo-cho established the brand "ORGANIC GARDEN" in 1994. As the brand name suggests, Organic Garden's items are made primarily from organic cotton. Organic cotton is cotton that is grown on land that has not been sprayed with chemical fertilizers or pesticides for more than three years, and has not been subjected to any chemical processing such as bleaching or shrinkage prevention. Since it does not contain chemical substances, it is gentle on the skin and feels softer than chemically treated cotton. |

■ What is Gobaishizome? Gobaishizome is a type of dye that uses galls, which are formed when the alder aphid parasitizes the young shoots and leaves of the alder tree and are used as the raw material for dyeing. This gallnut dyeing is characterized by a gentle black color that is unique to natural dyes, with a tasteful greenish hue. In addition, gallnut contains tannin, an antibacterial substance, and meets JIS standards. It has been used since ancient times in Japan for blackening teeth, and is said to also help prevent tooth decay and bad breath. |
