Koryo-cho in Nara Prefecture is known as the "town of socks," accounting for about 40% of the socks produced in Japan. In recent years, the proportion of socks imported from overseas has been increasing in the sock industry. Feeling a sense of crisis about this situation, volunteers from textile-related companies in Koryo-cho established the brand "ORGANIC GARDEN" in 1994. As the brand name suggests, Organic Garden's items are made primarily from organic cotton. Organic cotton is cotton that is grown on land that has not been sprayed with chemical fertilizers or pesticides for more than three years, and has not been subjected to any chemical processing such as bleaching or shrinkage prevention. Since it does not contain chemical substances, it is gentle on the skin and feels softer than chemically treated cotton. These ORGANIC GARDEN Gara-spun socks, unbleached x gallnut dyed, charcoal heather, regular length, are made from organic cotton yarn spun on a Gara spinning machine, which was developed in Japan during the Meiji period. The simple, rough, and cute-looking Gara-spun knit gently wraps around your feet. They also have a unique and gentle feel that you won't find anywhere else, so you'll be happy to have as many pairs as you like, making them a great gift! |

Garabo yarn is similar to hand-spun yarn, and the yarn is loosely twisted and has uneven thickness, making it highly absorbent. You can wear it in any season! The softly spun yarn from Garabo is full of warmth, which is its greatest appeal. However, Garabo yarn is also difficult to knit because its thickness is very uneven. Organic Garden carefully knits the yarn by finely adjusting the low-speed knitting machine for Garabo yarn. The soft, napped "ecru" color goes well with any style. The unique unevenness gives it a gentle texture and warmth. The "Gobaishi" socks are knitted using grey yarn dyed with the natural dye Gobaishi, and the organic cotton off-white and grey create an expressive marbling effect. These socks can be easily matched with any bottoms, such as jeans, skirts, or cotton pants. |
A rare spinning machine unique to Japan, the "Gara spinning machine" |
![]() |
The Gara spinning machine (Garabo) is a spinning machine unique to Japan that was developed in 1873 by Gaun Tatsuchi (1842-1900), an inventor and former Buddhist monk born in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture. It got its name from the "rattle" noise it makes when in operation. The yarn spun by the Gara spinning machine is loosely twisted and has uneven thickness, which is very close to that of hand-spun yarn. After the mid-Meiji period, Western-style spinning machines, which were capable of spinning yarn more quickly and more uniformly, appeared, and the number of Gara spinning machines gradually decreased. Currently, only a few machines remain in Aichi Prefecture, and they continue to spin yarn slowly. |
