Anyone can be captivated by the original designs and intricate craftsmanship of his watches - Koji Shinohara is a pioneer of Japanese handmade watches and the watch maker behind the watch brand "KS." Based on the concept of "tradition and innovation - the fusion of these opposing concepts," he creates a wide variety of handmade watches, such as the "Lost Future" series, which incorporates the worldview of steampunk into watches and makes the watches themselves look like machines that could start moving at any moment, and the "Wa-dokei" series, which can be worn for everyday use as well as with traditional Japanese clothing.
What first inspired Koji Shinohara to start making handmade watches was an encounter he had with a small watch factory in Hong Kong. After graduating from university and working for a trading company, he happened to be assigned to a business trip to Hong Kong and visited a watch assembly factory to sell parts. There, he saw five or six people busily assembling watches in a small room. Shinohara had always thought that large-scale, specialized equipment was required to make watches, but at the moment he saw this, he felt that making watches was something he could do himself.
Shinohara, who was originally a big watch enthusiast and would buy a watch every time he went on a business trip overseas, devoted himself to making watches for half a year after meeting him in Hong Kong. At the age of 29, he set up a small watchmaking studio in Kichijoji, Tokyo, and produced original watches using a variety of materials, including paper, brass, and silver. He gradually attracted the attention of the media, including magazines and television, and young people who wanted to become watchmakers began to visit Shinohara, hoping to become his apprentice.
In 1997, he founded the Japan Handcraft-Watch Association (JHA) to support the activities of watchmakers, such as acquiring watchmaking techniques and supplying parts. Currently, he continues to create his own works while also working to train the next generation. He is admired as a "master" by young people aspiring to be watchmakers, and is actively working to develop the world of handmade watches.

Introducing "Kasumi" from the handmade watch brand KS. This elegant and old-fashioned watch was created based on the design theme of traditional Japanese clocks made in Japan, mainly during the Edo period. The dial design starts at the 12 o'clock position, with the Rat, Ox, Tiger, and so on, before completing a full circle at the Boar. It is a simple yet sophisticated dial, and the hour hand rotates on a flower-shaped disk in the center. The case is made of brass, giving it an elegant and retro feel. Gypsophila flowers are densely engraved from the front to the sides. The gentle and soft atmosphere of gypsophila is captured with careful and precise technique. The dial also has a floral motif. The rounded crown looks like a flower bud. The design is cohesive! This is a lovely item full of femininity. |
