In recent years, the proportion of imported goods from overseas has been increasing even in the sock industry. Feeling a sense of crisis about this situation, a group of volunteers from textile-related companies in Koryo-cho established the brand "ORGANIC GARDEN" in 1994.

As the brand name suggests, Organic Garden items use organic cotton (organically grown cotton) as their main material.

The main appeal of these socks is the warm, softly spun yarn.

Unbleached is a natural cotton color that has not been dyed.

The gallnut thread is mixed with naturally dyed black thread.

These simple and gentle Gara-spun socks are made using yarn spun on a Gara spinning machine, a spinning machine that was used in the Meiji period.

Garabo yarn is similar to hand-spun yarn, and the yarn has a loose twist and uneven thickness, making it highly absorbent.

Gara-spun yarn is very uneven in thickness, making it a difficult material to knit.

At Organic Garden, they carefully knit their products using a slow-speed knitting machine that is finely adjusted to work with the gara-spun yarn.

The Gobaishi fabric uses grey thread dyed with the natural dye Gobaishi, while the Indigo fabric uses thread dyed with indigo, creating an expressive marbling effect.

The opening has an elastic band, so it fits gently around your ankle and doesn't slip off easily.

A rare spinning machine unique to Japan: the "Gara spinning machine"

The Gara spinning machine (Garabo) is a spinning machine unique to Japan that was developed in 1873 by Gaun Tatchi (1842-1900), an inventor and former monk born in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture.

It got its name from the rattling noise it makes when in operation. Yarn spun by the Gara spinning machine has a loose twist and uneven thickness, making it very close to hand-spun yarn.

From the mid-Meiji period onwards, with the emergence of Western-style spinning machines capable of spinning yarn more quickly and uniformly, the number of gara spinning machines gradually decreased. Today, only a few remain in Aichi Prefecture, where they continue to slowly spin yarn.
